Enclosure – large enclosure

TIMAHOE EAST

This previously unrecorded enclosure with associated cropmarks was discovered in March 2019 using Google Earth imagery. It was reported to the National Monuments Service in April 2019 and was allocated monument number KD009-047—- and classed as an enclosure – large enclosure. This is one of the more interesting of the sites I have discovered as there appears to be two separate enclosures. The smaller enclosure is circa 43m in diameter and is contained within the larger – although not centrally and perhaps unrelated or developed later. The larger potential enclosure is circa 155m in diameter and is represented as two curving boundaries that appear on the OS 6-inch map and are also present in various aerial imagery as large curving cropmarks and physical features on the ground.

The curving boundaries of the c.155m diameter enclosure are clearly visible as physical marks (with the appearance of ditches) on the pasture land in the areal imagery from 2009. Subsequent imagery shows that the land was under tillage but the curving features still appear as prominent cropmarks or soft undulating features of the surface topography.

The “ring-ditches” referred to in the entry below from the Historic Environment Viewer, were features in the adjacent field that I pointed out to the National Monuments Service at the same time as reporting these enclosure features. Subsequently, on closer inspection of the features identified as “ring-ditches”, I concluded that they were actually marks made by farm machinery. I reported this to the National Monuments Service and they will not be included in the next revision of the RMP.

KD009-047—-

Class: Enclosure – large enclosure
Townland: TIMAHOE EAST
Scheduled for inclusion in the next revision of the RMP: Yes
Description: Cropmark of circular-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 43m) visible on Google earth aerial imagery. This enclosure appears to stand inside a large oval-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 155m) which is partially depicted on the OS 6-inch map as a curving field boundary. This large enclosure is different morphologically from the surrounding field fences and appears to be pre-1700 in date. The outline of this larger enclosure is clearly visible on Google earth aerial imagery taken 18/04/2009. The cropmark of small circular ring-ditches (approx. diam. 11m) in the adjoining field to the NE are clearly visible on the 2009 aerial photograph. These small circular features only appear on the 2009 aerial photographs and may represent the remains of prehistoric ring-ditches.
See attached images taken from Google Earth aerial photographs taken 28/06/2018 and 18/04/2009
